Hosted by the Bourne Skating Club, a non profit skating club located in Bourne, MA, the 2018 Cape Cod Synchronized Classic took place last weekend.
Shannon Cobb, one of the Co-Chairs of the Cape Cod Classic, is sharing with us her experience.
How was the event last weekend?
The competition was great! We love seeing teams come in from all over. We also love to see the various level of skaters. We were also lucky enough to host ISU level officials from the US and Internationally. Our teams had the opportunity to attend a critique to receive feedback from some of many of the judges (9) on each panel.
How many teams competed and where did they come from?
84 Teams competed - they came from North Carolina, Michigan, Virginia, Washington DC, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Maine.
What was your favorite moment?
I love seeing the little teams come out. They are adorable but also so full of nerves and excitement. I love the look on their faces when they see and watch the older teams skate - a look of awe! Very cool.
A favorite program also?
Of course everyone’s favorite is the Haydenettes. Watching their power and style along with their beautiful dresses brings everyone into the rink and they all watch in awe.
What is the history of this competition?
The competition started as a small competition of 20 or so teams at our local rink in Bourne, Massachusetts. Over the years the competition has expanded to where we have moved it to a new larger venue with 2 ice surfaces and a gymnasium for warmups. The Cape Cod Classic has just completed its 24th year and we are looking forward to our 25th next year The competition is 100% volunteer run and is the most looked forward to event for all!
For non-Americans fans, what do "6.0 Events" mean in the results?
The 6.0 judging system is how all our Non-IJS teams are scored. In the US Non-IJS teams are Beginner teams, Preliminary, Pre-Juvenile, Open Juvenile, Open Adult, and Open Masters(Also an adult level). In the 6.0 judging system the judges rank all of the skaters in an event segment against one another by awarding two marks. The two marks are added together, for a “total mark.” Then, the marks are translated into a rank, called an ordinal. The overall results are determined by the ordinals that a majority of the judges on a panel award each skater. The majority of the panel is more than 1/2. For more information details, you can visit US Figure Skating website.
What will be your main goals for next season?
In 2019 we would like to see more International Teams join us as well as more Jr. and Sr. teams.
Bourne Skating club has been fielding Synchronized skating teams for many years. The local teams are called Icing On The Cape. The skaters come from historic Plymouth, Massachusetts to all over Cape Cod and some from Nantucket. Nantucket is a small island off the coast of Cape Cod.
