The Hevelius Cup's organizing committee decided this Monday to cancel the competitions planned from 17th to 20th December due to the COVID pandemic. However, an Interclub competition and a virtual "Christmas event" have been announced instead.

The ISU Challenger Series Hevelius Cup 2020 has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The competition was to be held in the city of Gdansk in Poland from December 17 to 20. The Organizing Committee (OC) announced it on Monday on social media "with broken hearts".

"Preliminary entries for the ISU Challenger Series Hevelius Cup were sent by 10 teams from 6 countries. Other countries expressed their interest in participating in the competition but made their arrival dependent on the situation related to COVID-19," explain Agnes Filipowicz and Marcin Miedlarz to Jura Synchro.

The organizing committee has waited until November 20 to close the entries for the event. "Unfortunately, some teams refused to come to us, explaining that the federation did not agree to leave the country. The smaller number of participants meant that the competition did not meet ISU requirements for the Challenger Series," regrets the OC.

According to the organizers, the situation with COVID-19 is "stable" in Poland. Schools are closed, children have online classes, but sports have practically no restrictions. Competitions are allowed without the participation of the public.

A Virtual Christmas Event
"We believe that teams need competition. They need to have a goal. So we decided to organize an interclub competition despite the difficulties. We also decided to help teams that can practice but not travel, so we want to organize a Christmas Event," adds the OC.

What does that mean?

Agnes Filipowicz and Marcin Miedlarz: "These will be virtual competitions that are to be as close to normal as possible. The competitions will be in all age categories. Scores will be shown during the stream and displayed after the program. Some of the Judges and the Technical Panel will be on the ice rink as in regular competitions, and some will be online. We also plan to enable consultations for coaches with Referee and Technical Controller."

"There are still many things we need to prepare, but we believe that the teams need this competition very much."

Applications for the Christmas Event are due December 6, videos must be submitted by December 14, and the competition will take place on December 20.
