British Synchro season starts with Wales and West Competition

British Synchro started this weekend at Wales and West Synchronised Skating Competition in Cardiff. With over 30 teams competing across 10 categories, this was the first opportunity for many to showcase this season’s routines. However, it was Nottingham’s teams that led the way, with every team winning a gold medal.

SENIOR

There was tough competition in this category between Team Spirit from Cardiff (British Champions 2015) Zariba from Aberdeen (defending Champions) and Wight Jewels from the Isle of White. These teams will be fighting to secure a place at the World Championships in Colorado Springs later this season. Zariba was in the lead after their short programme on Saturday, earning 27.38 and Spirit hot on their heels with 25.48.

The next day was just as tense, with Spirit 1st in the Free Skate and Zariba 2nd. However, it wasn’t enough for them to take the gold. Zariba finished 1st overall with a total segment score of 76.31. Spirit were awarded 74.88 with Wight Jewels trailing with 64.39.

We have got feedback and have room for improvement ready for our next competition in Belgium at the Winter Cup.
Team Icicles

JUNIOR

Team Icicles from Nottingham were the only entry in this category. The 4x British Champions kept their cool and received a total segment score of 102.66. Speaking to them after the competition, they said, “Team Icicles are really proud of our performances at the Wales and West Competition. We have got feedback and have room for improvement ready for our next competition in Belgium at the Winter Cup.”

JUNIOR B & SENIOR B

These categories are becoming more popular in Britain with 3 entries in Junior B. Team Destiny from Cardiff earned the gold medal with a total segment score of 53.05 and were closely followed by Team Unum from Sheffield with 52.80. All Stars from Slough were the only Senior B entry, earning a total segment score of 46.11.

OTHER CATEGORIES

It was a successful day for all the Nottingham teams, earning gold medals in Advanced Novice, Juvenile, Elementary, Preliminary and Mixed Age. Meanwhile there was a high turnout for the adult teams, a growing category in Britain, with Bladerunners from Altrincham winning gold.
