Eighteen years ago, on September 11, 2001, two planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, in the United States of America. Nearly 3,000 people were killed. If everyone around the world remembers this tragic event, the Skyliners teams, based near New York City, chose to honor the victims through their team name.

"When our team was formed, we decided on the name Skyliners since we are so close to New York City. We started our first season in early September 2001. Just a few days later, the New York City skyline and the United States would be changed forever," wrote the U.S. teams today on Facebook.

Skyliners are so inspired by the city skyline in the Big Apple. "We think about those who lost their lives, those who lost loved ones, the first responders and all of those affected by the 9/11 tragedy today, and every day. We will never forget," added the teams.

Synchronized skating is also a way of remembering tragic moments in history and paying tribute to them and to the victims.
