The Hevelius Cup 2021 has been selected by the International Skating Union (ISU) to become a Challenger Series competition next season. This will be the first time that Poland will host this major synchronized skating event.

"We are honored, proud and happy that the 5th Hevelius Cup will be part of the Challenger Series. When ISU announced for the first time the Challenger Series, which was a year ago, it was our dream to host this prestigious competition," said Marcin Miedlarz, head of the organizing committee.

Gdansk will be next season a stage of 2020-2021 Synchronized Skating Challenger Series. The event applied for the organization as soon as an announcement appeared on the ISU website. "We knew that it will not be easy to be selected. Now the dream has come true," added Marcin.

The competitions will be held at the Olivia Hall, "the same ice rink where competitions have taken place from the beginning of synchro skating in Poland".

Olivia Hall is a complex of two full-size covered ice rinks. The stadium also have a conference room, a sports hall and a hotel next to the arena. A total of 3,300 seats are available for spectators. Many skating events have already taken place in the Olivia Hall, including the ISU Junior Grand Prix and the ISU Junior Grand Prix Final.

"This will be the fifth edition of the competition for us. Every time we try to introduce new organizational solutions, improve things that we think can be better organized. Each subsequent edition is a new challenge for us," explained Marcin.

The local club SKF Iceskater has eight synchronized skating teams, including the Polish National Team - Ice Fire Junior. Coached by Agnieszka Filipowicz, the Polish team improved a lot season after season. 20th at the 2018 World Junior Championships, the team finished 16th in 2019 and 9th last month in Great Britain!

"Their achievements make us so proud. At the same time, we try to develop the Hevelius Cup. We want to show the beautiful discipline of synchronized skating is. We want to promote this sport throughout Poland," continued Marcin.

But, due to the coronavirus situation, Marcin Miedlarz knows that the season to come will be extremely difficult. "Currently, all ice rinks and schools are closed in Poland. It is hard to prepare the competition right now, as most offices and companies are closed. However, we have a great Organizing Team and despite the difficulties, we will be ready in December to host the best teams in Gdansk," he concluded.

Hevelius Cup will be the 3rd stage of the Challenger Series calendar next season. The competition will take place in Gdansk (POL) from December 17-19, 2020.

As every year, the organizing committee invites also the non-ISU teams in Poland. For them, the competitions will take place on December, 19th and 20th, 2020.
