The International Skating Union (ISU) launched the season by publishing 2019-2020 Technical Handbook for the panels. It's an opportunity to have a look at some technical elements that the fans will be able to see this season in the synchro programs.

For those who have not yet studied carefully the rules for this season. Here are some of the main changes

Synchro teams will have the opportunity this season to reach a Level 4 in all the main Elements (except Artistic and Creative Elements). The new rules also precise the ice coverage requirement with a minimum of 30 meters on the ice.

Another modification is also the difference between "stopping" and "stationary". The stopping means that the skaters are really standing and have no movements of the blades, and the stationary is required when the athletes on one spot but their blades are moving (like during a spin or toe steps).

This publication is primarily studied for the panels who will use it to judge and give the levels to the teams.

In Components, panels will take into consideration the basic skating technique (for example the balance and how skaters carry themselves in the ice), speed, or the precision of the foot placement and edges.

For the Transitions, panels will look at the originality and will reward the most creative ones. The challenge in the transition is always to think about quality and continuity. Synchro teams this year will have to balance speed and flow, with complexity.
