This past weekend kicked off the North American season in Colmar, Pennsylvania, at the Philadelphia Synchronized Skating Invitational. The arena was filled with a mixture of excitement, anticipation, and nerves for what each team had prepared to bring to the ice.

The first IJS competition was the Juvenile division, won by DC EDGE. The team earned 44.50 for their free skate to the upbeat musical 9 to 5. Their program was entertaining, as well as exciting with intricate transitions. Dazzling the audience with their colorful and sparkling dresses, Team Delaware juvenile skated to a “The Magic of Make Believe” theme where they received the silver medal and a total segment score of 37.67. Philadelphia Symmetry took home the bronze medal and a score of 33.34 on home turf. The Synchroettes out of New Jersey rounded out the division with the pewter medal and a score of 29.71.

DC EDGE continued their golden streak into the Intermediate competition, earning a total segment score of 55.11 with their Rockettes themed program. Team Delaware skated into second place with a total score of 53.49, skimming past DC EDGE in the Program Components score by .14. Newcomers to the intermediate division, Triangle Formation, made an impressive debut, capturing the bronze medal with a total segment score of 51.74. The audience can look forward to watching this team’s Funny Girl program progress throughout the season. Chesapeake Synchro’s Mask of Zorro free skate finished in fourth place with a total segment of score of 49.26.

The audience adored the new flirty and sophisticated style that Adrian College Varsity Senior chose to portray for this season’s short program. Skating to the hit French pop song, "Dernière Danse" by Indila, the Bulldogs earned a total segment score of 41.14. Despite five falls in their season’s debut, the team received a Level 4 and all positive GOEs on their Twizzle Element. It will be an exciting season for them as they will be performing their Parisian short program at the French Cup in the beginning of February.

As always, the Junior division is one of the fiercest competitions and the teams showcased that on Saturday night in the short program event. The third IJS team out of the DC EDGE organization took home the gold on Saturday, skating to Spiderman. Their most notable factor was their speed and poise that they carried into each element. DC EDGE earned a total segment score of 51.19, five points ahead of Team Image who came in second. Team Image attacked their sassy, fierce short program to a violin remix which earned a total segment score of 46.15. Despite two deductions, Team Image is certainly a force to be reckoned with this season. Philadelphia Symmetry and Synchroettes finished the short program in third and fourth respectively with only .25 separating them.

Closing out the night was a crowd favorite, Adrian College Varsity Collegiate and their high-energy free skate to Gloria Estefan. Their choreography and interpretation was as bright and hot as their glittery, pink dresses. The team picked up right where they left off from at the US National Championships, earning a 71.51, a score that most collegiate teams earn in January. Their highest scoring elements were the moves in the field element and synchronized spin. This was an impressive debut from the Bulldogs!

On Sunday morning, Adrian College Varsity Senior announced their withdrawal from the Senior Free Skate competition. The audience should prepare for a thrilling free program from Adrian College Varsity in a few short weeks at the 2018 Kalamazoo Kick-off Classic.

DC EDGE took home another gold medal in the Novice competition. Skating to a “Carnevil” theme, the team earned 55.27 for their total segment score. The team earned a total segment score of 78.47, a fourteen-point increase from their score at the US National Championships in late February. The Synchroettes took home the silver medal for their free skate to Once On This Island, scoring 58.84. The highlight of this program was the entire team performing a backflip vault in a line. Philadelphia Symmetry finished in third, less than two points behind the Synchroettes. Skating to the popular musical, Dear Evan Hansen, Philadelphia Symmetry earned 57.53 for their free skate. Team Image withdrew from the free skate event but will be competing it at The Boston Synchronized Skating Classic on Saturday, November 17th.
