Colorado Springs is the second most populous city in the state of Colorado, behind Denver. This popular resort lies on the eastern slope of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains at the base of Pikes Peak (14,110ft/4,301m). The surrounding area has many natural attractions. Here are a few ideas to discover this area.

1. Garden of Gods

Time to spend: 2 hours - half day
One of the nation's most fabulous city parks is Garden of the Gods. Just 6 miles northwest of the city, this is a nature park with bizarrely shaped red sandstone formations and ancient cypresses. The highlights are the red sandstone rock formations that are as much as 300 million years old.



2. Pikes Peak

Time to spend: half day - full day
Pikes Peak is the iconic 14,115-foot peak’s soaring heights, a windy highway to a ride on the cog railway, hikes up its trails and frame-worthy views from nearby Garden of the Gods.



3. United States Olympic Training Center

Time to spend: 2 hours - half day
United States Olympic Training Center is the main complex for the U.S. Olympic Committee and the primary Olympic Training Center in the United States. It is the headquarters of the USA swimming and shooting programs, as well as more than a dozen other USOC member organizations.



4. United States Air Force Academy

Time to spend: 1 - 2 hours
The Air Force Academy welcomes all visitors to one of this country's National Historic Landmarks. The military academy is for officer cadets of the U.S. The Academy's stated mission is "to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become leaders of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation."

5. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Time to spend: half day - full day
Nearly 950 animals from around the world roam Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s 146 acres, including one of the largest giraffe herds in the world. Above the zoo is the impressive Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun. A visit to the shrine can easily be combined with a day at the zoo.
