British Synchronised Skating Championships

The British Synchronised Skating Championships took place at the NIC Nottingham this weekend. With over 60 teams competing across 11 categories, there was a great deal of inter-club rivalry and stakes were high in the Junior and Senior categories.
Senior
On Saturday, in the short programme, Zariba from Aberdeen skated a powerful routine, securing first place with a score of 32.53. Team Spirit from Cardiff skated a moody number in blue, earning 29.27 points with Wight Jewels from the Isle of White following with 25.58.
Sunday was the Free Skate where Zariba secured their position, earning 65.80 (98.33 in total). Spirit skated to a Slumdog Millionaire routine, earning them 59.76 (89.03 in total) whilst Wight Jewels skated an upbeat number to the Lion King, earning 58.43 (84.01 in total).

Junior
There was competition in this category for the first time in years with Team Icicles from Nottingham competing against Solway Stars from Dumfries. Icicles went into the lead in the short programme, earning 40.60 with Solway Stars receiving 32.16.
The following day, Solway Stars captivated the audience with their unique free programme skated to Alice’s Theme, receiving 61.44 (93.60 in total). Nottingham rose to the challenge, skating to a Bollywood theme, earning 73.63 (114.23 in total).

Junior B and Senior B
In Junior B, Team Destiny from Cardiff were delighted with their gold medal receiving a total score of 65.06. Their coach was delighted with their performance, enthusing, “We did it! BRITISH CHAMPIONS 2017! Just a few simple edges, a lot of knee bend, a bucket-full of love for synchro and each other and nerves of steel!” All Stars from Slough were the only Senior B entry, earning a total score of 58.50.
Advanced Novice A and B
In Advanced Novice A, Team Shadows from Nottingham were the only entry and scored 46.60. In Advanced Novice B, Whizz Kids from Altrincham skated with magnificent hairdos to Maleficent, winning their category with 32.03 points.
Juvenile
In Juvenile, Team Silhouettes from Nottingham skated a strong programme to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, earning a personal best of 42.21. SuperNova from Lee Valley gained a silver medal for their new programme to School’s Out (24.60 points) while Presto from Sheffield followed hot on their heels earning bronze with 24.30.
Elementary
Elementary was a popular category with teams fighting for a podium place. Icepops from Nottingham led the way with 23.24 points, followed by Altair from Altrincham and Stardust from Lee Valley with 19.54 and 17.05 points respectively.
Preliminary
Preliminary was also a hotly contested category with Icetastic from Nottingham winning gold with 35.48 points. Phoenix from Lee Valley won silver with 28.47 points and Azura from Aberdeen gained bronze with 25.71.

Mixed Age
In the Mixed age category, Rocking Robins from Nottingham skated to the Spice Girls, earning gold with 41.64. Aura from Lee Valley skated to a Military inspired number earning silver with 33.44 points and Solway Eclipse from Dumfries earned 29.72 points.
Adult
The Adult category is growing in popularity in Britain and competition was fierce. Bladerunners from Altrincham skated a daring and exciting routine which paid off, earning them gold with a score of 28.86. Starlight Rain from Stirling received silver with 25.03 and Orion from Lee Valley gained bronze skated to a space theme, scoring 23.03.
