Next Saturday, during the Finlandia Trophy, Team Paradise will participate in its first international competition at Espoo, Finland. This is the opportunity for Jura Synchro to catch up with the team and to assess the situation with its head coach.

The first international competition is coming up in a few days. How is Team Paradise doing?

Irina Yakovleva: We are looking forward to the Finlandia Trophy. The team really missed the international competitions! The girls want to meet their rivals, feel the excitement of the fight again. We are glad that the world is returning to normal life after all the upheavals and long isolation. We want to convey to everyone a feeling of joy and celebration!

How many skaters do you have this season?

We have 20 skaters on the team. Six girls are new among them. They are full of energy and desire to work.

What are your goals as a team this season?

Our main goal for the season is to skate well, enjoy every competition and reach the high level of Team Paradise again.

Last season was tough for many teams around the world. How did you experience this crisis?

Last year, we were at a loss and did not understand what would happen next. This is a serious reason to lose motivation. We were in full isolation for several months and had only some practice indoors online. When we began our practice on the ice, I decided to change only the free program in these circumstances. We made our version of  “Swan Lake” by Tchaikovsky P.I. Our Federation organized several competitions, including the National Championship, where we could compete and show our new program. Team Paradise became the champion of Russia for the 23rd time.

It's a great pity that we had no opportunity to show our “Swan Lake“at international competitions! It was really a very beautiful and dramatic program.

We are happy that we are slowly returning to our normal life. For this season, we changed both programs. They are quite different in style. I wanted to show the wide competencies of my team and prepare something unexpected! You will see one of them soon.

How do you feel a few days before your first international competition?

We are looking forward to our trip to Espoo! We are eager to show our new short program. We will be happy to meet our friends, to support our singles and pairs and to feel like a part of the figure skating family.

Can you tell us more about your programs?

We have prepared two new programs for this season. Our free skating program is quite different from the short program. It is about beauty, grace, love and the power of female nature. But I don't want to talk about the programs yet, let's keep the surprise for everyone!

This season, Team Paradise is planning to participate in Lumiere Cup in the Netherlands and French Cup in France. "But everything depends on the COVID measures of the host country. In any case, we hope for the best!" explains the coach.
