A good captain can make a big positive difference for a synchronized skating team. As the new season gets underway, here are 10 qualities that will make you (or your teammate) a good leader.

In synchro, being named a team captain is an honour.

Captains aren't just there to stand on the podium at medal ceremonies. They also have great responsibilities.

Here are 10 qualities you think a captain of a synchro team should have.

Caring
Great captains put their team's success ahead of their own needs and are truly concerned with the well-being of all members. Good captains constantly look for ways to serve their team and help it accomplish its goals.

Good in communication
It means talking and listening. A good team captain must consider what all the teammates have to say. It will promote respect within the team, and that's so important.

Approachable
It's essential to treat all teammates with respect and recognize the contributions made by all team members. In case of problem, a team captain should positively approach the skaters to find a solution. The captain should also be the one to stop gossiping to keep good team chemistry.

Hardworker
Great captains have an undeniable passion for the game and, of course, for competing. Captains are not necessarily the most talented people in their team. On the contrary, they possess the will to keep pressing and to motivate each skater. Their persistence in achieving results has a positive influence on team members.

Behave as a leader
Team captains lead their team to victory. And we know that well in synchro skating, sharing is the key. Synchro team captains will maintain control in the most pressurized situations and be the model of excellence for their teammates. Good leaders on a synchro team will improve the team’s attitude and performance.

Consistent
Synchro team captains must "walk the talk". They must be courageous and cannot be afraid to compete in the worst of situations. Good captains set the example for the rest of the team are a model of consistency. Consistent team captains need to hold themselves to a standard of giving 100% effort in every practice and competition.

Empathic
A good captain keeps everyone accountable and goes on without hurt feelings. The role of a team captain is also to listen to others. By having empathy for a teammate, a captain will show support and willingness to be a leader for every team member.

Inclusive
It is an aspect that is often forgotten, and yet it is essential. A synchro team that works and goes in the same direction is, above all, a group of individuals who each have their own particularities. Leading a team also means including everyone, regardless of their background, character or diversity.

Passionate
Passion for synchronized skating is key. Good team captains always lead their team further in its objectives. Team captains know how to transmit their passion by sharing it with others.

Positive
Team captains' attitudes and actions set the tone for the rest of a team. So if a team captain goofs off or slacks off during practice, she/he are permitting everyone to do the same. Great captains behave as examples, even in difficult situations like recently during the pandemic months, to maintain the team's motivation, and be ready for the upcoming season.
