The wild west is the place of legends: cowboys and sheriffs come to mind, but of course we are talking about the legends that emerged from day 2 of the 2020 Canadian Synchronized Skating Championships that take place this weekend in Calgary.
The day kicked off with the Intermediate first skate. Nexxice took the lead with 36.22, Golding Ice sits in second (35.12) and Oakville Edge, for the first time in program history sits in third (31.37). Champions will be crowned for the intermediate event on Sunday.
It was time for the Open teams to say Howdy! to the Calgary crowd. Aiming for a fourth consecutive national title, Nexxice took the lead with 51.45 points. Nova sits in second due to some critical errors (43.94) and Les Pirouettes trails closely behind with 43.57. Champions will be crowned along with the intermediate event on Sunday.
After much excitement, the rodeo was just beginning in Calgary. Gold Ice Novice was the first team to win gold with 108.28 points overall. Nova moved up from third, earning the silver medal (103.50). Les Supremes finished in third place with 100.66 points.

Nexxice junior in gold!
It was the edge of sundown when records were broken in the Junior category, as Canada saw 7 entries, the largest in modern history. Nexxice claimed the gold medals for the first time since 2016 (194.34). Les Supremes took silver (181.05) and Nova won bronze (156.00). Les Supremes and Nexxice will represent Canada at the 2020 ISU World Junior Synchronized Skating Championships in Nottingham, Great Britain. Both teams were selected in January at Winterfest.
The top 5 teams (Nexxice, Les Supremes, Nova, Ice Ignite and Gold Ice) will have the opportunity to compete internationally in the 2020-2021 season. Les Pirouettes and LMSSC Junior will be monitored by Skate Canada to determine eligibility for international assignments.

The Senior showdown
In traditional wild west fashion, a showdown was set for the three Senior teams vying for the 2 spots to the 2020 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships in Lake Placid.
Nexxice (Burlington, Ontario) was first to take the ice and skated a calm, powerful program to the theme of statues. They earned a new seasons best of 152.28 in the free program and 225.41 overall.
Les Suprêmes (St. Leonard, Quebec) came out fighting after a devastating end to their 2019 Canadian championship and a rocky practice earlier in the day. A program with a powerful message, they took the lead scoring 156.63 to total 239.05.
Reigning Canadian Champions, Nova (Bourcherville, Quebec) was last to skate. Their innovative bird theme program earned them 146.30 in the free program and a total score of 221.34 to take home the bronze medal.
