Ontario Regionals: One Step Closer to Calgary

The 2020 Ontario Regional championships took place at the Markham Centennial Community Centre from February 7th-9th. 89 teams from Windsor to Ottawa competed over the 3 day period, with teams in Novice, Intermediate, Open, Junior and Senior vying for a trip to the 2020 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships in Calgary, Alberta in just over 2 weeks.
The competition began Friday with the Junior and Senior short programs.
Nexxice Junior took top spot, improving their score from French Cup to earn 65.21. In the free skate, Nexxice took gold (186.02), Gold Ice earned silver (140.89) and Ilderton’s Ice Ignite won bronze (137.95). We will see all three teams in Calgary for the Nationals.
The lone senior entry, Nexxice saw a lower score than the Leon Lurje trophy for the short program (73.24). They earned 140.26 in the free skate and 213.50 overall.

Saturday morning kicked off early with the Pre-Juvenile event. Nexxice claimed their third gold medal of the event (20.06), with hosts Sparkling Ice winning silver (19.59) and Oakville Edge took bronze (16.76).
The Juvenile event was plagued with unfortunate falls for the top 4 teams. Nexxice was able to maintain their winning streak, taking another gold medal home (30.38). Gold Ice overcame major demons to win silver (28.40) and Ilderton Ice Ignite won bronze (27.28).
The Pre-Novice event was very exciting. With Ice Lightning from Port Carling claiming gold (29.49) over Gold Ice who took silver (29.40) and Sparkling Ice, who won bronze (27.62).
The Novice event wrapped up Saturday with the second skates. Gold Ice took the title with 92.77 points, over reigning champions Nexxice (silver) 92.21. Sparkling Ice took bronze (89.18). Meraki, Synchronicity and Starlight have also earned allotments to Nationals.

Nexxice claimed their fifth gold medal of the event, winning the Intermediate category (108.81) for the sixth year. Oakville Edge took silver (100.03) and Team Unity won bronze (86.06). Rounding out Team Ontario at Nationals will be Meraki, Ice Fyre, Dynicety, Ice Ignite and Starlight.
The Open category rounded out the qualifications for the weekend, with Nexxice picking up its sixth gold medal of the event (161.91). Capital Ice from Ottawa won silver (101.60), showing great improvement. Superior Synchro from Thunder Bay rounded out the event winning bronze.

The Adult 1 event rounded out the day with some excellent performances. Team Unity won their fourth gold medal of the season (57.13) over Mississauga Ice Precise (56.02) and Synchronicity (52.25).
The Adult 2 teams got off to an early start on Sunday morning. Team Unity won gold (47.41) and bronze (38.97). Ice Ignite won the silver medal (41.20).
In Adult 3, Mississauga Ice Precise took the title (21.15), followed by Team Unity in silver position (20.79) and taking bronze was Whitby Ice Fyre (18.63).
The Adult 2 teams got off to an early start on Sunday morning. Team Unity won gold (47.41) and bronze (38.97). Ice Ignite won the silver medal (41.20).
In Adult 3, Mississauga Ice Precise took the title (21.15), followed by Team Unity in silver position (20.79) and taking bronze was Whitby Ice Fyre (18.63).
Sparkling Ice and the Unionville Skating Club hosted this competition welcoming skaters, officials and fans. Canadian Nationals will take place from 21 to 23 February.
