"One day, our coach said she wants to create a team to compete in another city. And this is how we started training. We knew about synchronized skating, but we never imagined that we would evolve in this discipline", said Team Tengri, a synchro team from Kazakhstan.

This team comprises 16 skaters and trains in Nur-Sultan, a city of more than 800 000 inhabitants - the 2nd largest in the country.

"Synchro has something incredibly beautiful and graceful"
Coached by Tatyana Chobi, Team Tengri usually practices four days a week; each training session lasts two hours. "We chose this sport because we found it has something incredibly beautiful and graceful. Also, we wanted to develop synchronized skating in our country," continued the team who is working on a program this year.

"Our goals are to participate in various international competitions, gaining experience and professionalism. Another goal is to learn new complex synchro elements," explained the skaters.

As soon as its program is ready, the team wishes to participate in synchro events. However, due to Covid and travel restrictions in the countries surrounding Kazakhstan, nothing has been planned for the moment.

"Our practices take place in an Al-Farabi Palace for schoolchildren."

Unlike figure skating, synchronized skating is not yet very popular in Kazakhstan. "We are doing our best to change that. It may be hard at the beginning, but then everything gets better. We have a very friendly team, and that is one of the advantages."
